I started this game recently (encouraged by "Play or Pay" group), in January. Had more or less the same feeling as you -- growing too slow, felt a bit "directionless"... I was so afraid of wasting my few resources, I ended up looking up a few wikis to see what gifts people liked, and it annoyed me -- same as you, I think consulting a wiki really gets me out of the game. So I left the game aside for a while, and retried last week.
