What type would Jack Reacher be? He's commonly typed as an ISTP but in the 2012 film he demonstrates characteristics of an ISTJ, particularly in his investigation style, which seems more in line with Si/Ne, but I'm not positive, and I'd like to hear your thoughts on it.

Answer:

I haven’t seen it, but a good rule of thumb with ISTX types is to remember their approach to problem-solving and confidence when it comes to the unknown.

Si/Ne learns on a basis of careful accumulation of details, comparison to past experiences and information, and awareness of the perils of impulsive behaviors – inferior Ne is very skilled at staying safe (unless in an extreme situation or under stress) because Si-dom is not going to risk their profession on anything less than a certainty. Inferior Ne does not over-estimate its ability to adapt and handles unfamiliar situations with caution. This is why ISTJs have a reputation for being “by the book” – it’s not that they are rule-abiders, but that they do not want to take chances that can jeopardize their futures.

Se/Ni is far more comfortable winging it or making it up as it goes along, it’s also more inclined to trust its ability to do those things in high pressure situations, which means it takes more risks because there’s no inferior Ne uncertainty about how this might play out in the future. Se is present based, so it sees and leaps on opportunities, wanting to actualize them in the moment. Se/Ni follows hunches in the moment and doesn’t think about the longer term risks, usually.

ISTJ cops or special agents are more careful, precise, and exacting in their decisions and investigative style (cover all the bases, find the proof, back it up) than ISTPs, who tend to wing things, operate on following their hunches, take risks with confidence it will turn out all right, and are adept at adapting quickly to an environment and using it (the character who snatches up a chair, beats someone over the head with it, and climbs out a window to escape <- stereotypical, but that’s Se: awareness of the environment, knowing how to use it, and doing so with confidence).
